EFI systems have become increasingly popular over the last few years. Many people are looking to swap their carburetor for an updated system that is more reliable and one that they can “set and forget”.
But with so many systems out there it’s hard to decide which one to go with and if it’s even worth doing at all.
Many people choose to make the switch from a carburetor to EFI because EFI systems tend to be more reliable. This is due to the fuel being injected into the engine under pressure which makes for a consistent air/fuel mixture. When the air/fuel mixture is consistent then the car starts better, idles better, and just all around performs better.
Since the air/fuel ratio and all other metrics are measured electronically, the EFI system is constantly adjusting to make sure that the system is getting the exact levels of air and fuel at every moment throughout your drive. Carburetors aren’t as efficient when it comes to monitoring and adjusting themselves.
EFI kits will cost a few thousand dollars while you can pick up a good carburetor for $500.
Installing the EFI system and tuning it with a laptop can be intimidating to s omeone who is used to tuning carburetors. Usually the tuning step in the installation is the point that people call in a professional.
If you’re looking to make the switch from a carburetor to EFI then be ready for a bit of a learning curve. However, if you’re comfortable with the electronics and tuning aspect then you’ll be happy with the reliability and more efficient use of fuel with an EFI system.
